LASK vs Slovan Bratislava: a first Champions League win meets an eleven-game losing run

LASK return to Linz after a 3-2 victory at Sporting CP. Slovan have no points and have conceded 13 goals in three league-phase games, although two recent domestic wins offer a different picture.

The most revealing number may be neither club's point total. LASK have conceded first in every Champions League league-phase match this season, even their breakthrough win in Lisbon. Slovan Bratislava have lost all 11 matches they have played in the competition proper across two campaigns. Yet the Slovak side arrive after Tigran Barseghyan and Rahim Ibrahim scored in a league win on Saturday. The opening goal in Linz will test whether either team can escape its European pattern.

  • Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase Matchday 4.
  • Fixture: LASK at home to Slovan Bratislava.
  • Kick-off: Tuesday 3 November, 20:00 UTC; 21:00 CET in Linz.
  • Venue: Oberösterreich Arena, Linz, Austria; the ground is also known as Raiffeisen Arena.

LASK need more than the memory of Lisbon

LASK began the league phase with a 1-0 defeat at AEK Athens and a 6-3 home loss to Liverpool. Their 3-2 victory away to Sporting CP on 21 October was their first in the Champions League proper, according to UEFA. It brought three points and evidence that the side can respond on a difficult European night. UEFA also records the limitation: LASK conceded the first goal in all three fixtures and have gone eight European matches without a clean sheet. A second win would require a steadier start.

Their most recent Austrian league match was a 2-1 home victory over WSG Tirol on 31 October. Goalkeeper Lukas Jungwirth's miscontrol contributed to the visitors' opener. Alessandro Schöpf equalised, then Samuel Adeniran set up Robert Ljubičić on a counterattack that began with a WSG corner. Coach Dietmar Kühbauer called it a hard-earned result after a busy run of fixtures. Schöpf, Ljubičić and Adeniran offer recent attacking reference points, but their selection for Tuesday has not been announced.

Slovan's European and domestic records pull in different directions. UEFA says their 13 goals conceded are the most of any side in the current league phase after three rounds; their latest Champions League result was a 4-0 loss at Roma. At home, they beat Trenčín 2-0 on 28 October and Podbrezová 2-1 three days later. Barseghyan opened the scoring from distance against Podbrezová. Ibrahim followed up after his own header had been saved. Andraž Šporar started that game, having returned from illness against Trenčín. Those results demonstrate a response in Slovakia, not a proven European turnaround.

The latest on availability

LASK

No LASK medical update specific to Slovan was published in the club sources reviewed on 2 November. Jungwirth, Schöpf, Ljubičić and Adeniran all appeared against WSG Tirol. That confirms recent activity, not guaranteed availability or a starting place in the Champions League. Saša Kalajdžić is on UEFA's registered European squad list, which likewise is not a match-day selection. The final squad and line-up remain to be confirmed.

Slovan Bratislava

Before the 31 October Podbrezová match, coach Yaya Touré gave a detailed update for that domestic fixture. The club had not issued a definitive status report for Linz in the sources checked:

  • Alexej Maroš: was managing an ankle problem; Touré said he was not yet ready for that game. No Tuesday return has been confirmed.
  • Alasana Yirajang: remained unable to train after an injury sustained with the reserve team and was being monitored.
  • Roman Čerepkai: was still under observation for a physical issue. Neither an absence nor a return for LASK has been confirmed.
  • Andraž Šporar: returned from illness at Trenčín and started against Podbrezová. His recent return does not settle Tuesday's line-up.

Touré also said Mykola Kucharevič was getting closer to a return, but he does not appear on UEFA's visible squad list for this fixture and should not be counted as a confirmed option. Both clubs' final match squads may alter the picture.

Can the hosts avoid another early deficit?

Against WSG, LASK turned a defensive corner into the space Adeniran and Ljubičić used for the winning goal. At Sporting, their attack produced enough to overturn a setback. Slovan have repeatedly given opponents a head start: UEFA says they conceded first in ten of their 11 Champions League proper matches and were behind at half-time in ten. LASK will seek to push that tendency into another difficult away evening.

Slovan can still hurt a defence with its own problems. Barseghyan's shot from outside the area and Sandro Cruz's delivery for Ibrahim's rebound against Podbrezová are recent examples. LASK conceded six against Liverpool and have not kept a European clean sheet for eight games. Kevin Wimmer gives the meeting a personal thread: UEFA notes that the Slovan defender made 31 senior appearances for LASK in 2011/12. The clubs have never met in UEFA competition before.
