Shakhtar vs Sporting: a London Champions League night after a change in the visitors' dugout

Tiago Fernandes has taken interim charge of Sporting while the club discusses Rui Borges's departure. Shakhtar arrive with Alisson in scoring form but have lost Pedrinho to injury. Both teams are trying to respond to their first defeat in this season's Champions League.

Sporting will travel to London with a change that was not part of the match plan two days ago. On Sunday, November 1, the club said it had begun talks to end Rui Borges's employment and that Tiago Fernandes would take immediate interim charge. On Tuesday his team visit Shakhtar at Stamford Bridge. The Ukrainian side are the designated hosts, but the match is in England because of the war. Fernandes has little preparation time; how his players respond is a central question of Matchday 4.

  • Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase, Matchday 4.
  • Fixture: Shakhtar Donetsk host Sporting CP at a neutral venue.
  • Kickoff: Tuesday, November 3, 17:45 GMT in London (17:45 UTC).
  • Venue: Stamford Bridge, London, England; this is not a match in Donetsk.

The defeats that changed the mood

After three league-phase matches, Sporting have six points and sit 12th; Shakhtar have four and are 17th. The Portuguese club beat Galatasaray and Lens before losing 3-2 at home to LASK. Shakhtar defeated AEK Athens, drew with PSV and lost 1-0 to Inter. The standings remain young, but both are in the contest for knockout places, giving a meeting between near neighbours in the table immediate weight.

Shakhtar have since found an answer on the domestic stage. They beat Dynamo Kyiv 3-0 in the cup on October 27 and Obolon 2-0 in the league on October 30. Arda Turan's side dominated the first half against Obolon without scoring. Alisson came on in the 61st minute and struck in the 70th and 85th. Those goals offer Turan a potent option, though a decisive substitute appearance does not guarantee Alisson a start against Sporting. Shakhtar created chances through Traoré and their wide players before the change; the late breakthrough showed another way to unpick a compact defence.

Sporting won their latest league match too, 2-0 away to Casa Pia on October 30. Pedro Lima opened the scoring after Iván Fresneda arrived inside the penalty area; Geny Catamo finished a late counterattack with the opposing goalkeeper upfield. Luis Suárez had chances but did not score. The win followed home defeats to LASK and Académico de Viseu and did not prevent Sunday's announcement about the coaching position. Fernandes inherits a side that can press and contain counterattacks, with very little time to judge how much to change from Borges's approach.

Wide runners, Suárez and the gaps behind the full-backs

The tactical contest extends beyond the identity of Sporting's coach. Shakhtar crossed and looked for Traoré against Obolon; Alisson beat defenders from the right after coming on. If this match opens up, that width could test the visitors' full-backs and central defenders. Should Fernandes retain the pressure Sporting used at times against Casa Pia, his side will need cover behind Fresneda when the defender moves inside. These are possibilities based on recent play, not a confirmed lineup or private instructions from either coach.

At the other end, Suárez has scored in three consecutive Champions League appearances. UEFA says that equals the Sporting record shared by Sá Pinto and Nani; another goal would set a new club mark. His double against LASK was not enough to avert a 3-2 loss. Shakhtar must choose how closely to track him while closing off deliveries from wide areas. Pedrinho's injury removes one of Shakhtar's creative options, although UEFA's approval of Prosper Obah as his replacement on the European squad list adds another registered player. Registration alone says nothing about Tuesday's matchday selection.

The head-to-head record has limited predictive value after so long: Sporting won both 2008/09 Champions League meetings 1-0. UEFA also records the Portuguese club as unbeaten in eight games against Ukrainian opposition. Results from 18 years ago cannot decide a London match. More relevant is that Shakhtar, despite their home designation, will not have the conditions of a game in Donetsk.

Squad news and the interim appointment

Neither club has published a final matchday squad. The available information as of Sunday, November 1 has different degrees of certainty.

  • Shakhtar: on October 30 the club said Pedrinho was injured and that UEFA had approved Prosper Obah in his place on the league-phase squad list. Pedrinho is therefore not among the registered options for this match. Obah's inclusion does not establish whether he will be named in the matchday squad or play. Alisson scored twice against Obolon, confirming his participation then rather than a Champions League starting role.
  • Sporting: Portuguese reporting said Zeno Debast, Rodrigo Zalazar and Nuno Santos were still recovering and did not train with the group on October 31. Nestory Irankunda, who left the Casa Pia match with discomfort, joined other starters in recovery work; there is no public diagnosis that rules him out on Tuesday. Sporting have not yet released a final European match squad or individual match medical report.
  • Coaching: Sporting's statement says talks to terminate Borges's employment have begun; it does not say the contract has already been ended. It also says Tiago Fernandes took immediate interim charge. No permanent head coach has been officially appointed for this fixture.

How to watch Shakhtar vs Sporting

Kickoff is at 17:45 UTC. Where broadcasters list an earlier programme start, that time is distinguished from kickoff. A match page carrying scores or live text is not proof of a video transmission.

For Sporting, London will test whether the steadier performance at Casa Pia survives a coaching change made barely two days before kickoff. For Shakhtar, the test is whether recent attacking production can become European points away from Ukraine, even as the nominal home side.
