Barcelona vs Aston Villa: Flick's revived attack faces a perfect European start

Villa have won all three Champions League games and scored 12 goals. Barcelona answered two defeats with six against Alavés, but their reshaped defence must now deal with Nicolas Jackson.

Barcelona's 6-1 win over Alavés restored some of the attacking confidence lost against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. It did not settle the question waiting on Tuesday. Aston Villa arrive at Spotify Camp Nou with three wins from three in the Champions League league phase, and Unai Emery's side have scored 12 times in those matches. Barcelona have six points from three games and have now gone 18 consecutive Champions League matches without a clean sheet, according to UEFA. Their ability to create is clear; how they defend the moments after losing the ball may be the more revealing test.

  • Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase, Matchday 4.
  • Fixture: FC Barcelona host Aston Villa.
  • Date and time: Tuesday, 3 November, 21:00 CET in Barcelona (20:00 GMT; 20:00 UTC).
  • Venue: Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain.

A meeting between six points and nine

Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1 at home and Galatasaray 4-1 away before losing 4-2 at PSG. Villa edged Club Brugge 3-2 in Belgium, thrashed Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park and beat Viking 3-1. The English club enter the fourth round with nine points, three more than their hosts. There is a long way to go in the league phase, but that early difference makes this more than an exercise in style. A Villa win would extend a perfect start; Barcelona have a chance to close the gap against one of the teams above them.

Hansi Flick's side supplied a forceful response on Saturday. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal scored twice each against Alavés, Fermín López added a goal and two assists, and Anthony Gordon finished the scoring after coming on. The six goals followed losses to PSG and Madrid. Barcelona used high recoveries and quick combinations, while Flick also had to rebuild his back line: with six players unavailable, including four defenders, Brian Fariñas made his first-team debut at right-back and Frenkie de Jong played alongside Pau Cubarsí in central defence. Those changes produced a domestic win. Villa's European scoring record gives the arrangement a different examination.

The visitors have their own untidy weekend to interpret. They went out of the League Cup at Bournemouth in midweek, then drew 1-1 with Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday. John McGinn missed a first-half penalty before Nicolas Jackson put Villa ahead. An own goal from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki levelled the match after half-time. Emery called the draw fair, and Villa defender Ian Maatsen said his team had eased its pressure on the ball in the second half. Jackson's goal was his eighth of the season and fifth in his last five Premier League appearances, according to Villa. That form, along with the club's three Champions League wins, makes the striker central to Barcelona's defensive calculations.

What the selection news does, and does not, establish

Barcelona named Andreas Christensen, Roony Bardghji, Dani Olmo, Eric García, Jules Koundé and Xavi Espart as unavailable for the Alavés game. Four of those absences affected defenders. The club has not yet confirmed which of them will be available on Tuesday, so Saturday's squad cannot be treated as a Champions League injury list. De Jong returned to action against Madrid after five months away and filled in at centre-back against Alavés. His passing could help Barcelona beat Villa's pressure, but he and Cubarsí would also have to control Jackson's movement if Flick uses the same arrangement.

Villa's last club update before Fulham said Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka remained out injured and Amadou Onana was a longer-term absentee. The club has not announced their status for Barcelona. Matty Cash and Maatsen started at full-back against Fulham, while Leon Goretzka made his first Premier League start next to Boubacar Kamara. Emery made nine changes from the midweek cup game. The rotation gives him options, but it does not tell us whom he will select in Spain. It would be particularly premature to assume his full-backs can simply stay deep against Yamal and Raphinha: Villa also need an outlet for Jackson when Barcelona press.

The midfield could decide whether the game is played at Barcelona's speed or broken into Villa transitions. Pedri and Fermín helped drive the Alavés win; Kamara and Goretzka anchored Villa against Fulham. Flick replaced Pedri at half-time on Saturday and took Yamal off later, while Emery rotated heavily across the week. Those are known decisions about past matches, not announcements of Tuesday's starting elevens. The more useful question is what happens when a side loses possession: Barcelona have scored freely but conceded regularly in Europe, and Villa have been ruthless in the same competition.

Barcelona eliminated Villa from the 1977/78 UEFA Cup; Villa later beat Barcelona in the 1982 UEFA Super Cup. Those meetings are history rather than a guide to this result. Tuesday's contest will show whether Barcelona can match their attacking recovery with greater defensive control against a team that has turned its first three European matches into wins.
