Atlético vs Bayern: Harry Kane's scoring run meets Madrid's home record

Kane has scored in ten consecutive Champions League appearances, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo's competition mark. Atlético have found the net in twenty straight home matches in Europe, while Bayern travel with two newly confirmed attacking injuries.

Harry Kane's next Champions League goal would extend his scoring streak to eleven appearances and match a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. The possibility gives Bayern München's trip to Atlético de Madrid a compelling focus, but the setting resists an easy prediction. Atlético have not lost any of their three previous home Champions League meetings with Bayern, winning twice and drawing once. Diego Simeone's side have also won seven league games in a row. None of those records decides Tuesday's result. They do explain why two teams sitting outside the top eight after three league-phase rounds have an unusually rich contest ahead of them.

  • Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase, Matchday 4.
  • Fixture: Atlético de Madrid host Bayern München.
  • Date and time: Tuesday, 3 November, 21:00 CET in Madrid (20:00 GMT / 20:00 UTC).
  • Venue: Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Madrid, Spain.

Madrid's domestic run, Munich's European resilience

Atlético have four points from their first three European games. They lost 2-1 at Liverpool, beat Manchester United 2-0 at home and drew 1-1 in Stuttgart. UEFA placed them 16th before Matchday 4. Their league form has been more settled: Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone scored in a 2-0 win away to Levante on Saturday, Atlético's seventh successive LaLiga victory. The club said the result took Diego Simeone to 344 wins as a league manager, level with Luis Aragonés. The domestic sequence offers confidence, although a Champions League home game against Bayern asks a different question of Atlético's defensive spacing and transition play.

The hosts scored in each of their last twenty home Champions League matches, according to UEFA, and won ten of their last twelve home games in group or league phases. Bayern, however, have scored in their last 24 Champions League fixtures and lost just once in their previous twelve. Their league-phase record this season is less dominant than those longer trends: a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt followed by a 3-3 draw at Viking and a 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Kane put them ahead against Arsenal from the penalty spot before Declan Rice equalised late. Bayern stand on five points, one above Atlético.

Saturday's Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund brought another 2-2. Konrad Laimer and Dayot Upamecano put Bayern ahead in the two halves; Serhou Guirassy and Fábio Silva replied for Dortmund. Kane did not score in that league match, which does not affect his Champions League streak. The more consequential development came the next day. Bayern confirmed that Ismael Saibari suffered a torn syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle and had surgery, while Serge Gnabry sustained a muscle injury in the back of his left thigh. Both were injured against Dortmund and will be out for now. The club gave no return dates.

Where the contest may open up

Those losses narrow Bayern's choices around Kane. Luis Díaz had already suffered a left hamstring injury against Arsenal on 21 October; Bayern have not announced his status for Madrid. Michael Olise and Lennart Karl featured against Dortmund, but their Saturday involvement does not guarantee a Tuesday start. Joshua Kimmich can still organise possession, and Kane's movement between midfield and the penalty area poses a problem even if Bayern alter the players around him.

Atlético's availability needs the same caution. Johnny Cardoso sustained a low-grade thigh muscle injury against Stuttgart, the club said on 22 October. His return was left to the course of his recovery; Atlético have not yet issued the squad for Bayern. If he is absent, Simeone's midfield will need another way to protect the centre when Kane drops short and a runner attacks the space behind. If he returns, that changes the options without predetermining the starting eleven.

Grimaldo scored against Levante and, during his Bayer Leverkusen years, lost only one of six Bundesliga meetings with Bayern, UEFA notes. Giuliano Simeone also scored on Saturday and can carry play forward on the flank. Atlético could threaten if they recover possession and reach those wide areas before Bayern's defence resets. Conversely, long Bayern possessions would ask the Madrid midfield and back line to stay close enough to deny Kane room to turn. These are match-up possibilities drawn from recent games, not tactics either coach has announced.

Injuries and availability

The official reports below were issued on different dates. Atlético's October injury announcement does not by itself settle Cardoso's availability on 3 November.

Atlético de Madrid

  • Johnny Cardoso: low-grade thigh muscle injury confirmed on 22 October; return depends on recovery, with no match-specific status yet announced.

Bayern München

  • Ismael Saibari: right-ankle syndesmosis ligament tear suffered against Dortmund; underwent surgery and is out, according to the 1 November club update.
  • Serge Gnabry: muscle injury to the back of his left thigh against Dortmund; out under the same update.
  • Luis Díaz: left hamstring muscle injury announced on 22 October; Bayern have not announced his status for this fixture.

Across the eight previous meetings, Bayern lead four wins to Atlético's two, with two draws. Madrid has been different ground for the visitors: Atlético remain unbeaten at home in this pairing. Tuesday will test whether that home record can withstand Kane's movement and how Bayern reshape their attack without Saibari and Gnabry.
