Galatasaray vs Stuttgart: Istanbul pressure meets an unbeaten Champions League visitor

Stuttgart travel with seven points and a 4-2 win at Leverkusen behind them. Galatasaray recovered from two European defeats by winning at Lille and have just put four past Konyaspor. Both attacks are in form; the space they leave when possession changes could shape this contest.

Galatasaray and Stuttgart approach Champions League Matchday 4 from different parts of the table. The German side are unbeaten in the league phase, sitting sixth with seven points; the Turkish champions have three and remain lower down a standings still based on only three games. Their most recent performances narrow that apparent gap: Galatasaray won 4-0 in Konya on Friday, while Stuttgart scored four away to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. At Rams Park on Tuesday, each will have to find a way forward without supplying the counterattacking room the other wants.

  • Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase, Matchday 4.
  • Fixture: Galatasaray at home to VfB Stuttgart.
  • Kick-off: Tuesday, November 3, at 20:45 TRT in Istanbul (17:45 UTC; 17:45 GMT in the UK).
  • Venue: Rams Park, Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Four goals apiece before the meeting

Galatasaray began their European campaign with a 3-1 loss to Sporting CP and a 4-1 defeat against Barcelona. A 4-2 victory away to Lille brought their first three points and showed they could respond on the road. Stuttgart beat Viking 3-1 and Slovan Bratislava 3-0 before drawing 1-1 with Atlético de Madrid. Seven points put them in the top eight ahead of this round, although three matches cannot settle the final positions.

In Konya, Victor Osimhen headed in a Gabriel Sara free-kick to open the scoring. Yunus Akgün struck from outside the box and Aleksey Batrakov added a third early in the second half. Rafael Leão, who said afterwards that he had returned from an injury, scored his first league goal for the club from the penalty spot. Okan Buruk took Osimhen, Yunus, Batrakov, Lucas Torreira and Sara off in the 61st minute. That management of playing time is relevant four days before Stuttgart's visit, but says nothing certain about Tuesday's starters.

Stuttgart were clinical away from home too. Ermedin Demirović scored twice in their 4-2 win at Leverkusen, Jamie Leweling added another and Bilal El Khannouss got the third. Sebastian Hoeneß's side had less possession and fewer shots than the hosts, yet made their chances count and held on after Leverkusen's second goal. Their Champions League draw with Atlético showed a different attacking route: a high press, a recovery near the opposition box and Leweling finishing the move. Galatasaray must account for both versions.

Osimhen and Demirović, and the space around them

Osimhen's goal in Konya came from a set piece; Leão's carries and Sara's passing offer other ways through. Stuttgart must decide how far to advance their lines to keep Galatasaray away from the penalty area. Press as they did against Atlético and fail to win the first challenge, and Leão and Yunus could have room to run. Sit too deep, and Sara and Torreira may have time to pick the next pass. Those are possibilities suggested by the matchup, not declared plans from either coach.

The home defence faces a similar dilemma. Stuttgart scored twice early at Leverkusen and punished mistakes in an intense game. Demirović arrives with a brace, Leweling is on the scoresheet again and Deniz Undav contributed to the visitors' attacking play. An uncoordinated Galatasaray press might let them break; protecting the box too cautiously could allow Stuttgart to progress through El Khannouss or Angelo Stiller, should the latter be available. His fitness remains an open question.

UEFA lists this as the clubs' first European meeting. Galatasaray have not beaten German opposition at home in UEFA competition since 1992/93, a nine-match run. Stuttgart have scored in their past 11 away matches in the Champions League group stage or league phase. Those records do not decide Tuesday's result, but underline how difficult it may be for either side to protect its goal while pursuing the other.

Squad availability before European team sheets

Neither club has issued a definitive list of players available for Galatasaray–Stuttgart. The following is based on their latest statements and matches. Playing or training recently does not confirm a place on Tuesday.

  • Galatasaray: Leão played and scored against Konyaspor after an injury, as he explained after that match. Abdülkerim Bardakcı missed the domestic fixture because of a Turkish league card suspension; that absence should not be treated as a European ban. The club's November 1 training report gives no player-by-player injury or return list for Stuttgart. Its match squad is still to be announced.
  • Stuttgart: Stiller came off at half-time in the October 28 cup match with a knock, according to the club, and was absent from the squad that beat Leverkusen on October 31. Stuttgart have not yet said whether he will travel to or play in Istanbul. Luca Jaquez returned from a lengthy absence in the cup and started at Leverkusen; Nikolas Nartey made his competitive return from the bench on Saturday. Neither return guarantees Champions League minutes.

Galatasaray need the momentum from Lille and Konya to produce points at home in Europe. Stuttgart can strengthen their place near the top if they reproduce their Leverkusen finishing. The first press, and what happens when either team plays through it, will reveal which of those ambitions has firmer ground.
