Feyenoord vs Inter: Dutch league leaders face a different test in Europe
Feyenoord are unbeaten after 11 Eredivisie rounds but have only three Champions League points. Inter also have three and arrive after a 3-1 derby defeat to AC Milan. Wide play and the space left after pressing could shape the night in Rotterdam.

Their identical European points totals conceal very different domestic starts. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Feyenoord lead the Dutch league without a defeat, yet have conceded eight times in three Champions League games. Inter beat Shakhtar Donetsk, Fiorentina and Venezia in succession before Milan punished them in the derby. Both have five league-phase fixtures remaining after Tuesday, so a result at De Kuip will change their room for error without settling qualification.

Feyenoord's league control has not travelled into Europe
Seven wins and four draws have given Feyenoord 25 points from 11 Eredivisie rounds. Europe has been less forgiving: a 5-1 loss at Barcelona, a 3-2 home win over Como and a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis leave them with four goals scored and eight conceded. Inter's official opposition analysis describes a side usually arranged in a 4-3-3, sometimes shifting to 4-2-3-1, with midfield support and attacks built through the wings. That is the visitors' assessment of Feyenoord's tendencies, not a confirmed lineup for Tuesday.
The past two domestic games have both ended 1-1, at PSV on 25 October and at home to Fortuna Sittard on 31 October. Against Fortuna, Luciano Valente scored before Feyenoord wasted chances to finish the contest; Shiloh ’T Zand equalised late. Reaching dangerous positions was not the problem. Converting them and keeping enough players behind the ball when an attack breaks down will be more closely linked against Inter.
Captain Valente connects midfield and attack. Anis Hadj Moussa can create a one-on-one from the right and scored against Como; Gjivai Zechiël also found the net in that win. Ayase Ueda offers another presence in the forward line. None of those roles establishes who will start: the European squad and lineup had not been announced as this preview was prepared.
Inter's European recovery meets a derby setback
Inter opened their Champions League campaign with defeats to Real Madrid, 2-1, and Club Brugge, 4-3, then took their first points by beating Shakhtar 1-0. Serie A wins over Fiorentina, 2-1, and Venezia, 2-0, followed. Milan's 3-1 derby victory on 31 October interrupted that run. Inter's own match account describes two goals conceded in the first ten minutes, Alessandro Bastoni pulling one back and Milan restoring a two-goal lead before half-time. Inter could not turn their second-half possession into a comeback.
Cristian Chivu used a 3-4-2-1 in the derby, with Marcus Thuram up front and Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolò Barella involved in midfield. Bastoni scored after Manuel Akanji prolonged a Çalhanoğlu corner. Federico Dimarco's side of the pitch, Thuram's movement and set pieces are among Inter's options; the derby lineup does not establish how Chivu will set up in Rotterdam. Lautaro Martínez, Inter's leading scorer in the Champions League proper with 27 goals according to UEFA, was absent from the derby squad after the club reported a muscle injury on 15 October. His availability on Tuesday remained unconfirmed.
Where the ball may change the game
Hadj Moussa, supported by Valente, can force Inter's wing-backs to choose between stepping out and guarding the space behind them. If Feyenoord move beyond the first press and draw an outside centre-back away, they can attack the area with greater numbers. If they lose possession while their full-backs are high, Thuram and whoever joins him may have space to run into. Inter's analysis identifies that space behind Feyenoord's full-backs as a potential weakness; the derby also showed that Inter's own pressure can be bypassed when its timing slips.
The centre is another contest. Oussama Targhalline can give Feyenoord cover when Valente and Zechiël advance. Çalhanoğlu will look for time to direct play and deliver set pieces. These are possible consequences of the players' roles and recent matches, not claims about private instructions from either coach.
The clubs have each won a two-legged tie against the other. Feyenoord advanced in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup semi-final; Inter won their 2024/25 Champions League round-of-16 meeting. UEFA records Feyenoord unbeaten across six home Champions League group or league-phase matches against Italian visitors, and Inter unbeaten in 14 successive UEFA games against Dutch clubs. The streaks describe different slices of history. Tuesday's outcome will depend more directly on how each team handles its turnovers and chances.
Team availability before Feyenoord vs Inter
Neither club had issued a final match squad at the start of Monday, 2 November. Inter scheduled training sessions and press conferences for both sides that day. A return to training or an earlier squad list does not guarantee a place in this match.
Feyenoord
- Jeremiah St. Juste: missed the Fortuna Sittard game after leaving the PSV match with a problem. On 30 October, Van Bronckhorst said he could not yet say whether the defender would return against Inter or in the following league game. He has not been ruled out of Tuesday's match.
- Gijs Smal, Reiss Nelson and Shaqueel van Persie: Van Bronckhorst said they were nearing a return to the match squad, but Fortuna came too soon. Their presence against Inter was not confirmed.
- Jakub Moder: returned to the squad for PSV, Feyenoord said on 23 October, after not yet playing this season. A return to a squad list is no guarantee of Champions League minutes.
- Other players: Feyenoord had not published a complete match-specific availability report for Inter.
Inter
- Lautaro Martínez: Inter reported a left hamstring strain on 15 October. He was not in the derby squad on 31 October, and the club had not confirmed whether he would be available in Rotterdam.
- Other players: Inter's 1 November training update did not list individual ins and outs for this fixture. It should not be read as an all-clear for the squad.
St. Juste's unresolved status affects Feyenoord's centre-back options; Martínez's affects Inter's attacking rotation. Those are conditional football implications, not forecasts of recovery.
