Manchester United vs Roma: a test of finishing and control at Old Trafford
United have three points after successive Champions League defeats. Roma have four and arrive after scoring five at Udinese, although several important players remain uncertain for Tuesday's trip.

The old head-to-head record belongs to Manchester United. The more relevant question on Tuesday is whether Michael Carrick's side can turn openings into goals without allowing Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma to play through the space it leaves behind. Both teams need points in the fourth round of the league phase, but they approach Old Trafford from quite different positions of confidence.

United's chance creation meets its own fragility
United began their European campaign with a 4-0 win over Sabah, then lost 2-0 to Atlético de Madrid and 4-1 to Como, according to UEFA's club-by-club results. Three points from three matches place them 20th in the league-phase table. Roma are 15th with four. There is time left in the eight-game phase, but a third consecutive United loss would narrow its room for error considerably.
Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea exposed the difference between creating chances and controlling a match. The club's report records Bruno Fernandes missing after a Bryan Mbeumo break, Amad getting into dangerous positions and Matheus Cunha having a first-half goal ruled offside. Morgan Rogers then scored after the interval. Lisandro Martínez received a second yellow card, and Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty. Mbeumo struck the crossbar late on. Martínez's dismissal was in a domestic competition and does not itself establish a Champions League suspension.
Fernandes returned to the starting XI at Chelsea after sitting out the Bournemouth game. His ability to receive behind a pressing line, combined with Mbeumo's direct running and Amad's movement, could trouble Roma's high defensive shape. The condition is that United take their chances and protect the space behind their own midfield when attacks break down.
Roma's attack offers several routes
Roma drew 1-1 at Fenerbahçe, lost 4-3 to Real Madrid and beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in their first three Champions League games. Their 5-2 Serie A victory at Udinese on 31 October offered a vivid example of their varied scoring: Bryan Cristante, Rodrigo Mora, Donyell Malen and Evan Ndicka struck before half-time, with Daniele Ghilardi adding the fifth. Gasperini said afterwards that Roma had scored 28 goals in their first ten league matches, a club high for that span. Udinese was their seventh fixture in three weeks.
Malen gives Roma a runner and finisher at the point of attack. Matías Soulé can carry the ball and create from deeper positions. In Gasperini's 3-4-3, the wing-backs can pin United back while the front line presses the first pass out. The risk of that approach is visible too: if Fernandes escapes the initial pressure and releases Mbeumo or Amad, the outside centre-backs may be forced to defend long runs toward their own goal.
Availability, as last reported on 1 November
Neither club had issued its final match squad by Sunday afternoon. United's Monday training session and the two managers' scheduled news conferences may clarify the picture. Being seen in training would not, by itself, confirm selection.
Manchester United
- Amad: appeared to leave the Chelsea game in discomfort. United's official Monday preview said Carrick might provide an update; his status for Roma remained uncertain.
- Kobbie Mainoo: returned to the squad at Chelsea and came off the bench. That was a recent competitive return, not confirmation that he will start on Tuesday.
- Lisandro Martínez: sent off against Chelsea in the Premier League; no automatic inference about European eligibility follows from that domestic red card.
- Other players: United had not yet published a complete match-specific availability report for Roma.
Roma
- Mile Svilar, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Paulo Dybala and Manu Koné: all missed Roma's official squad for Udinese. After that game, Gasperini said all four had been absent during the recent stretch. Of Svilar, Dybala and Koné, he said some might return before the international break, but none might. He did not confirm a return for Old Trafford.
- Other players: Roma had not yet released its match squad for Manchester.
Svilar's absence would affect the goalkeeper choice; Koné's, the midfield's ball-winning; Dybala's, Roma's options between the lines. Those are football implications of unresolved fitness questions, not medical forecasts.
History supplies context, not an answer
UEFA's Matchday 4 figures put United five wins to Roma's two, with one draw, across eight European meetings. United won all four home encounters, scoring 15 goals. Carrick played against Roma six times in the Champions League and scored twice in United's 7-1 win in 2007. Roma have won only one of 21 UEFA away games against English clubs. None of those results will settle this fixture. The contest in the present is between United's ability to sustain an attack and Roma's willingness to commit numbers forward despite a crowded schedule.
