Raptors at Lakers: Barnes and Dončić need help after two revealing defeats

Scottie Barnes scored a career-high 41 points in Toronto’s loss to Orlando. Luka Dončić had 37 as Los Angeles surrendered a 25-point lead to Golden State. Their meeting on Sunday will test the support around both creators.

Toronto and Los Angeles arrive at Crypto.com Arena with different records but a similar question. Barnes produced the biggest scoring night of his career on Friday, yet the Raptors fell 121-114 to Orlando. Dončić scored 37 against Golden State while the Lakers, once 25 points ahead, lost 112-95. Neither performance was wasted because of one missed shot. Each team failed to sustain its offense and defense through a decisive stretch.

This is a 2026-27 NBA regular-season game, separate from the NBA Cup group games both clubs played on Friday. Toronto is 3-2 and Los Angeles 4-2. Those early records leave plenty of room for change. They also give Sunday's matchup a useful focus: whether the Raptors can generate enough around Barnes late in a close game, and whether the Lakers can keep possessions under control when Dončić's first burst fades.

Toronto's 41-point night did not settle the finish

The Raptors beat Orlando 129-99 on Wednesday, then lost the rematch two days later. Barnes made 19 of 34 shots for 41 points on Friday, with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Toronto led by two with eight and a half minutes left before the Magic finished on a 21-12 run. Immanuel Quickley supplied 17 points and eight assists; Jakob Poeltl had 12 points and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

Those numbers suggest more than a simple need for another scorer. Barnes can force the defense to collapse, and Quickley can organize the next action. The issue is how quickly teammates use the space that follows. RJ Barrett scored nine against the Magic after putting up 25 in Wednesday's win over the same opponent. Two games do not establish a lasting pattern, but the contrast shows why Toronto needs more than Barnes's shot-making to close out possessions under pressure.

Poeltl's work near the basket may be especially important in Los Angeles. If the Lakers send extra defenders toward Barnes, the center can turn an interior pass or an offensive rebound into points. If they stay home, Barnes may have more room to attack. Neither option is automatic; Walker Kessler gives the Lakers a sizeable rim protector who recorded four blocks against Golden State.

Kawhi Leonard is back with Toronto this season. He missed Wednesday's game because of swelling in his left knee, according to the NBA's account of the Raptors' win. That earlier absence does not establish his status for Sunday. At the latest official injury-report cutoff checked for this article, Toronto had not submitted its report for the Lakers game.

A 25-point lead became a warning for Los Angeles

The Lakers opened against Golden State with a 38-15 first quarter. Dončić scored 21 in those opening 12 minutes. The Warriors answered with their own 38-15 second quarter and eventually won by 17. Dončić ended with 37 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Austin Reaves had 21 points and five assists. Los Angeles, however, committed 20 turnovers. Its bench scored seven points to Golden State's 50, and Reaves alone had eight turnovers.

The Lakers' roster offers other ways to absorb the load. Kessler can protect the paint and finish inside; Collin Sexton gives them another ball-handler. Their presence is not a promise of a particular rotation. The question is whether the second unit can deliver reliable possessions when the primary creators rest, and whether Reaves and Dončić can get the ball to those teammates without exposing the team in transition.

Los Angeles hosts Miami on Monday, so Toronto is the first of two home games on consecutive nights. The Raptors played Friday and have Saturday between games. The schedule matters when discussing workload, but it does not confirm that either coach intends to rest a player.

Where the game could turn

Toronto's transition opportunities are the first pressure point. The Lakers' 20 turnovers against the Warriors gave away attacks and invited the opponent to run. Barnes and Barrett can punish that kind of disorder if it recurs. Los Angeles therefore needs possession security as much as another high-scoring quarter from Dončić.

The paint is the second. Barnes repeatedly reached favorable spots against Orlando, and Poeltl's six offensive rebounds extended Toronto possessions. Kessler's rim protection could curb those chances, but aggressive help may leave Quickley or a wing free outside. On the other end, Toronto has to keep Dončić from creating an advantage on every first action without allowing easy finishes behind its help.

Secondary playmaking is the third. Quickley's eight assists show one route for the Raptors beyond Barnes. Reaves's five assists and eight turnovers against Golden State show both the value and the risk of asking him to handle more. If defenders force the two stars to pass early, the quality of those next decisions will matter more than the headline scoring totals. These are tactical possibilities drawn from recent games, not lineups or plans announced by either coach.
