Eagles at Commanders: Tanner McKee meets Washington’s rested defense

Philadelphia has lost five straight and arrives with a depleted receiving group. Jayden Daniels and Washington return from their bye still searching for sustained drives.

Philadelphia won the first meeting 24-22 in September. The rematch finds both NFC East teams in a very different place. The Eagles followed a 2-0 start with five consecutive defeats and travel to Landover after Monday’s 38-21 loss to Dallas. Washington, 1-4-1, has had a bye to prepare. Neither side can treat this as a routine divisional fixture: the winner will have interrupted a damaging run, while the loser will be left with fewer ways to explain it.

Game details

  • Competition: 2026 NFL regular season, Week 8; NFC East matchup.
  • Teams: Philadelphia Eagles away at the Washington Commanders.
  • Venue: Northwest Stadium, Landover, Maryland.
  • Kickoff: Sunday, November 1, 8:20 p.m. EST in Maryland (5:20 p.m. PST); Monday, November 2, 1:20 a.m. GMT.

Jalen Hurts is out for the rest of the season, according to the Eagles, leaving Tanner McKee to make a third consecutive start. Against Dallas he completed 23 of 35 passes for 211 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Philadelphia put together three long scoring drives but conceded 38 points. McKee’s progress is a genuine development, yet it has taken place amid injuries at receiver, running back and along a team that has struggled to hold opponents down.

Saquon Barkley is cleared to play after a limited Friday practice for hamstring and back problems. That designation says he is available; it does not establish how many snaps he can handle. He missed two games before returning against the Cowboys, when he was limited after aggravating the hamstring. The Eagles promoted Jaydon Blue to the active roster after placing Dameon Pierce on injured reserve. Elijah Mitchell is another possible backfield option if elevated from the practice squad. How Philadelphia divides those carries could shape the kind of passing situations McKee faces.

The home offense revolves around Jayden Daniels. In Washington’s previous defeat to San Francisco, he completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns, according to the Eagles’ official preview. Terry McLaurin is on injured reserve, so Stefon Diggs, Chig Okonkwo and younger receivers must absorb more of the passing work. Washington has also indicated that Austin Ekeler could take a larger role while Jacory Croskey-Merritt remains unavailable. Daniels can extend a play or carry the ball himself, but the Commanders still need more possessions that last.

Washington’s own preview puts the club last in the league in third-down conversion rate. That is the practical problem behind its 1-4-1 record. The Eagles, meanwhile, have allowed 131 rushing yards per game and recorded only eight sacks, according to the same Commanders account. If Philadelphia cannot contain Daniels without abandoning pass coverage, Washington can build drives through both his legs and his arm. If the visitors force third-and-long, the bye-week rest alone will not solve the home team’s offensive inconsistency.

Who is available

The Eagles’ final Friday report rules out five players. DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks leave McKee short of established outside targets; Britain Covey will also miss the game as a return option. Linebacker Jihaad Campbell and cornerback Jonathan Jones are out on defense. Nolan Smith has cleared concussion protocol. Barkley has no questionable designation, although his recent setbacks remain important when assessing his likely workload.

  • Philadelphia, out: Jihaad Campbell (hamstring and quadriceps), Britain Covey (knee), Jonathan Jones (hamstring), DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle).
  • Philadelphia, available after the final report: Saquon Barkley (hamstring and back) and Nolan Smith (cleared concussion protocol).
  • Washington, out: Javon Kinlaw (knee).
  • Washington, questionable: Daron Payne (foot), John Bates (shoulder), Treylon Burks (foot) and Jer’Zhan Newton (pectoral).
  • Washington, longer-term absences: Terry McLaurin and Jacory Croskey-Merritt remain on injured reserve.

Washington’s uncertainty is concentrated in its defensive front. Kinlaw cannot play; Payne was added to Friday’s report. Newton could return after a preseason pectoral injury, but a possible return is not an active-game confirmation. Charles Omenihu was limited in practice without a questionable game designation. Those distinctions matter if the Commanders hope to control Barkley without committing extra defenders to the box.

The matchups that can change the night

Washington blitzes on 43.9 percent of opponents’ dropbacks, the NFL’s second-highest rate according to Philadelphia’s preview. McKee must identify pressure and deliver on time, particularly with Smith and Wicks absent. Dallas Goedert and rookie Makai Lemon can give him shorter answers. Washington must also prevent Barkley from making every rushing attempt a way around obvious passing downs.

At the other end, the question is whether Vic Fangio’s defense can shorten Daniels’ drives. Washington needs to convert on third down, while Philadelphia needs pressure that does not open an escape lane for the quarterback. Without McLaurin, Diggs and the inside targets carry extra weight. The season opener was decided by two points; this game will test which team has adjusted better to the personnel changes since then.
