Ravens at Bills: Jackson returns to face a rested Buffalo team with a finishing problem
Baltimore's quarterback is set to play after three missed games. Josh Allen and James Cook lead a 5-1 Bills team coming off its bye, but both defenses have questions about how they finish drives and halves.

Baltimore led Buffalo by 15 in the fourth quarter on its last visit and lost 41-40. Sunday's meeting takes place in a different stadium, with the same two quarterbacks again at the center of it. Lamar Jackson is returning from an ankle injury; Josh Allen has had a bye week to prepare with a Bills team that stands at 5-1. The 4-3 Ravens have lost two straight and need more than an encouraging start.
- Competition: 2026 NFL regular season, Week 8.
- Matchup: Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills.
- Venue: the new Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park, New York.
- Kickoff: Sunday, November 1, 1:00 p.m. EST in Buffalo; 18:00 UTC.
Jackson's return changes the attack, though it cannot fix every weakness
Coach Jesse Minter said Friday that Jackson will play after taking part fully in three practices this week. He missed the previous three games with a left ankle sprain, and Baltimore went 1-2 without him. Jackson said he still feels some pain but can tolerate it. The club has announced his return; how freely he moves against the Bills remains to be seen on the field.
In four starts this season, Jackson completed 70.8% of his passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns and one interception, according to the NFL. Derrick Henry gives Baltimore a forceful running option, while Zay Flowers can benefit when Jackson extends a play beyond its first read. That range of choices was missing during the quarterback's absence. It will not, by itself, erase a collapse against Cincinnati last week.
The Ravens led the Bengals 13-0 at halftime and lost 35-13. Their six second-half possessions produced no points, while the defense allowed five consecutive touchdown drives. Minter has asked for a response that lasts all four quarters. He must also alter his protection: rookie right guard Vega Ioane is out, leaving Emery Jones Jr. or Andrew Vorhees to take his place.
Allen and Cook give the Bills two routes through the defense
Buffalo rested in Week 7 after a 33-30 win over Las Vegas in Week 6. Through six games, Allen had passed for 1,504 yards and nine touchdowns and run for another 240 yards and eight scores. James Cook had 627 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Baltimore must account for Allen escaping the pocket without leaving Cook room between the tackles or opening easy throws behind its linebackers.
The bye did not automatically solve Buffalo's problems on defense. Coordinator Jim Leonhard has pointed to penalties and missed opportunities on third down that have kept opposing drives alive. His unit showed improvement against the Raiders compared with its fourth quarter against the Rams, but still allowed ten points in the final period in Las Vegas. Defensive lineman Ed Oliver has no injury designation and the team expects him back after an absence since Week 4; that expectation is not a record of snaps he has yet to play.
Last season's meeting offers context rather than a script. Henry ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns, yet the Bills scored 22 fourth-quarter points to overturn a 15-point deficit. Rosters and the physical venue have changed. The danger of giving Allen an extra possession late in a game has not.
Availability after the Friday, October 30 reports
Baltimore Ravens
- Lamar Jackson: no game injury designation; Minter said he will play after missing three games with a left ankle injury.
- Vega Ioane: out with a knee injury.
- Jaylinn Hawkins: out with a knee injury.
- T.J. Tampa and Adam Randall: questionable. Both are in their practice windows after injured reserve and would have to be activated to play.
Buffalo Bills
- DJ Moore: questionable with a shoulder injury.
- Dalton Kincaid: questionable with a chest injury.
- Spencer Brown: questionable with a back problem.
- Dee Alford: questionable with an ankle injury.
- Greg Gaines: questionable after a lower-body problem in Friday's practice.
- TJ Parker: questionable with a knee injury in the official post-practice update.
- C.J. Gardner-Johnson: unavailable because of a one-game league suspension.
- Tyrell Shavers: Buffalo said it will not activate him from injured reserve this week.
- Ed Oliver: no game injury designation; the club expects him back after not playing since Week 4.
Moore and Kincaid are important targets for Allen, while Brown protects the right edge of the line. Their questionable status does not settle Sunday's lineup. Gardner-Johnson's suspension creates a separate adjustment in the secondary as Buffalo prepares for Flowers and Jackson's improvised throws.
Where the second half may turn
Baltimore's first defensive task is to tackle Cook without allowing Allen to turn a broken rush into a long gain. Kyle Hamilton has a role in both problems, although the entire unit must tackle more reliably than it did against Cincinnati. Buffalo faces a different test: Jackson and Henry can lengthen drives if defensive penalties provide extra first downs. Leonhard's players need to end possessions cleanly, particularly when Jackson moves beyond the pocket.
