Timberwolves at Spurs: Minnesota's new scoring test meets Wembanyama's surge
San Antonio has won three straight after an 0-2 start. Minnesota arrives without Anthony Edwards, who has undergone knee surgery, and faces a second game in as many nights. Saturday also reunites the teams from May's Western Conference semifinals.

The last time these teams met in a series, San Antonio advanced with a 139-109 win in Game 6. That result is background rather than a forecast for October. Both teams stand at 3-2, but their immediate problems are different. The Spurs have found momentum after two opening losses; the Timberwolves must replace the scoring and creation of a player who averaged 33.3 points through their first four games.

Minnesota's offense has to change shape
Anthony Edwards scored 47 in Monday's overtime loss at Cleveland. He missed Wednesday's game against Golden State, and the Timberwolves announced Thursday that he had undergone an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. The club gave no return date. His absence removes a player who could score without a set play and draw defenders away from teammates.
Minnesota's first game without him ended in a 119-114 loss to the Warriors. The Timberwolves fell 24 points behind, closed the gap in the fourth quarter and could not finish the comeback. Jonathan Kuminga scored 20; Jaden McDaniels and Terrence Shannon Jr. had 19 each. LaMelo Ball finished with eight. The varied sources of points suggest possible ways forward, but the defeat showed how hard it is to sustain an offense when its leading scorer is unavailable. After opening 3-0, Minnesota has lost twice in succession.
The Timberwolves host the LA Clippers on Friday before traveling to San Antonio. Saturday will be the second night of a back-to-back, and Friday's result and workload were still unknown when this preview was prepared. Coach Chris Finch has said Edwards' scoring must be replaced collectively. Ball can direct possessions and create for others; Kuminga, McDaniels and Shannon offer different attacking routes. Which combinations Finch uses against the Spurs remains unannounced.
Wembanyama has put the Spurs back above .500
San Antonio followed two opening defeats with three wins. Wednesday's 117-111 victory in Utah required overtime. Victor Wembanyama scored 36 points, took 14 rebounds and delivered five assists, while Devin Vassell scored 21. The previous night, Wembanyama had 29 points, ten rebounds and five blocks in a 130-103 win over Sacramento. The Jazz game was much tighter, a reminder that the winning streak has included difficult stretches.
Wembanyama's reach changes how opponents approach the lane. If Minnesota drives into a settled defense, the Spurs can contest shots at the rim; moving the ball first could make those attempts less predictable. San Antonio must also secure rebounds. McDaniels, Kuminga and Rudy Gobert give Minnesota size and paths to second-chance points even without Edwards. Those are tactical questions, not announced lineups or a prediction based on last spring's playoff series.
Minnesota availability
In the NBA's official report issued at 2:45 a.m. Eastern on Friday, the Timberwolves had not yet submitted the report for Saturday's game. The Friday report for their Clippers game listed two absences, and the club has independently confirmed Edwards' procedure:
- Anthony Edwards: underwent right knee arthroscopy Thursday; the club has not announced a return date. Out against the Clippers on Friday. A formal status for the Spurs game had not yet been filed.
- Donte DiVincenzo: out against the Clippers while recovering from right Achilles surgery. The Spurs game report remained pending.
San Antonio availability
The Spurs had likewise not filed their Saturday report by the NBA's 2:45 a.m. Eastern update Friday. Tobias Harris missed Wednesday's Utah game with a calf problem; that earlier absence does not establish his status against Minnesota. The league requires fresh designations before each game.
Where the matchup could turn
Minnesota's first challenge is to find good shots if San Antonio can direct more defensive attention toward Ball and the paint. The passing and perimeter shooting of the wings may matter as much as any one player's scoring total. The Spurs' challenge is to press a team playing on consecutive nights without surrendering their own transition defense. Wembanyama draws defenders and can free space for Vassell and the guards, but Minnesota can answer with length and rebounding.
May's series supplies history, not an answer. The Saturday meeting will offer a more useful measure of how Minnesota's offense functions without Edwards and how the Spurs handle a team that can contest their size inside.
