Celtics at Magic: Boston's inside game meets Orlando's reshaped attack

Boston has won four straight, while Orlando heads home after an emphatic response in Toronto. Paolo Banchero's ankle injury remains the major availability question ahead of Sunday's meeting.

The Celtics and Magic both won NBA Cup games on Friday, but their next meeting at Kia Center is an ordinary regular-season contest. Boston led Chicago by 29 at halftime on its way to a 125-111 win. Orlando had to withstand a much closer finish in Toronto before winning 121-114. Those two performances suggest the questions for Sunday: can the Magic keep Boston out of the paint, and can the Celtics contain Franz Wagner's playmaking without giving Desmond Bane open shots?

Boston is 4-1 after four consecutive wins since its opening defeat at Detroit. It beat the Bulls twice in five days, first by 35 points and then with a 44-point opening quarter. Payton Pritchard scored 30 off the bench on Friday, Jayson Tatum added 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Paul George supplied 18 points and eight assists. The Celtics' own account noted a change in Pritchard's scoring: after making seven threes against Chicago on Monday, he did most of Friday's damage inside the arc and at the free-throw line.

Orlando cannot simply stay attached to Boston's shooters. The Celtics scored 56 points in the paint against Chicago. Tatum and George can both start possessions, and Pritchard gives the second unit another route into the lane. Neemias Queta and Mitchell Robinson also present work for the home team's big men around the rim and on the glass. That is an assessment of Boston's recent options, rather than a claimed starting lineup for Sunday.

The Magic's 2-3 record hides a sharp change from one game in Toronto to the next. They lost the first 129-99 on Wednesday, then made 18 of 34 three-point attempts in Friday's rematch. Wagner had 26 points and 11 assists, Bane scored 28 with six threes, Wendell Carter Jr. contributed 20 and Anthony Black finished with 17 points and 10 assists. Orlando also cut its turnovers from 20 in the defeat to 13 in the victory. Keeping that control against Boston's active hands may matter more than matching Friday's exceptional shooting percentage.

There was still a warning in the win. Toronto gathered 15 offensive rebounds, and another opponent may make more of those extra possessions. Orlando must finish its defensive work after challenging Tatum or George in the lane. At the other end, Bane's perimeter threat can pull a defender away from Wagner's driving and passing routes. Black offers a further ball handler if Boston loads up on the first option. The matchup is about how those choices interact, not a prediction based on one hot night from three.

What Orlando knows about Banchero

On October 24, the Magic said an MRI had confirmed a low-grade right high ankle sprain for Paolo Banchero. The club said he would undergo further evaluation and did not announce a return date. He was inactive against Toronto on October 30. His designation for this Celtics game still needs the official game report; neither an appearance nor a formal Sunday absence should be assumed before that update. Wagner, Bane and Black carried more creation without him on Friday.

Jalen Suggs, Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson were also inactive for Orlando's game in Toronto. That previous game's list is useful context, but it is not Sunday's injury report. In the NBA's official report issued at 4:45 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 31, both teams were marked “not yet submitted” for their November 1 meeting. The league requires teams to report affected players before a game and updates the document throughout the day. Any new doubtful, out or available designation needs a later check.

The possessions to watch

Carter's ability to contest drives and secure the rebound will help determine whether Orlando can turn a stop into a chance to run. Boston, meanwhile, will want to disrupt Wagner's decisions without losing Bane after a help rotation. The Celtics took six steals in the first quarter against the Bulls; the Magic responded to their turnover-heavy loss in Toronto by moving the ball with more care. The first few possessions should show whether that correction travels home with them.

Both clubs played Friday and have Saturday without a game. Boston travels from Massachusetts to Florida; Orlando returns from Toronto for its first home fixture since October 23. One result will not settle either season. It will show whether Boston's varied scoring keeps working against a team seeking a more physical identity, and whether the Magic can sustain Friday's response while Banchero's return remains unresolved.
