Two late goals on Wednesday sent these clubs into the weekend with very different feelings. Josh Sargent struck in the 86th minute to complete Toronto's comeback against D.C. United. In New York, Atlanta had only just equalised when Bénie Traoré scored a 95th-minute winner for NYCFC. Toronto can still pursue a playoff place. Atlanta have been eliminated, but Sunday's game is their last at home in the 2026 regular season and an immediate chance to answer a frustrating run in front of their supporters.

  • Competition: 2026 MLS regular season, Matchday 34.
  • Fixture: Atlanta United at home to Toronto FC.
  • Kickoff: Sunday, November 1, 4:30 p.m. EST in Atlanta (21:30 UTC).
  • Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia.

Toronto bring momentum into a difficult away ground

Toronto's club preview lists nine wins, 11 defeats and 12 draws from 32 league games, leaving Robin Fraser's side on 39 points. Their recent five-match sequence since October 10 contains three wins, a draw and a loss. The latest victory, 2-1 over D.C. United on October 28, mattered for more than the points. Toronto trailed, found an equaliser through captain Jonathan Osorio and then won through Sargent with four minutes of normal time remaining. It gave a team still chasing the postseason another proof that it can recover when a match turns against it.

Sargent supplies a focal point at the top of Fraser's attack. Against D.C., his header helped create the equaliser before he reacted to a rebound for the winner. Osorio's goal took him to 70 for Toronto FC, according to the club, while Djordje Mihailovic delivered the corner that began the equalising move. Those are different ways of threatening Atlanta: a forward who can occupy defenders, a midfielder who arrives in scoring areas and a set-piece taker who can turn a stationary ball into a chance.

The setting provides a substantial counterweight to Toronto's form. The club says it has never won a regular-season match away to Atlanta, drawing five and losing four of its nine previous visits. Atlanta also won the first meeting of 2026 in Toronto, 2-1 on April 25. Neither record determines Sunday's result, but they explain why the visitors cannot rely on momentum alone. They must manage Atlanta's spells on the ball and make their own pressure count, particularly if the contest becomes stretched in the second half.

Atlanta's home finale after elimination

Atlanta enter with 30 points from 32 games, according to Toronto's official match notes. Their 2-1 defeat at New York City FC on October 28 ended their playoff chances. Breel Embolo equalised in the 88th minute, only for Traoré to win it for the home side in the 95th. The sequence captured Atlanta's immediate problem: moments of attacking quality have not always been matched by the control needed to finish games.

Coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has framed the final two league fixtures as a chance to improve habits before next season. The first of those fixtures is at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where Atlanta's club preview says the team have gone six home games without a win. That is a concrete objective even without a playoff place at stake. Their supporters will also see the final home appearance of this regular-season campaign. Toronto's urgency and Atlanta's desire to end that home run should give the game a sharper edge than the league table alone might suggest.

Atlanta have already shown how they can hurt this opponent. Alexey Miranchuk scored from a free kick and Tristan Muyumba also found the net in April's 2-1 victory at Toronto. Miranchuk's ability to receive between lines can draw defenders away from their positions. Muyumba offers a second route forward when he moves up from midfield. Embolo can hold up possession long enough to bring those players into the attack, while Miguel Almirón has the pace and close control to carry the ball through open space. These are tactical possibilities based on their roles and recent performances, not a confirmed starting XI or a promise that Martino will repeat April's plan.

For Toronto, Sargent's movement can pin Atlanta's central defenders and open room for Osorio and Mihailovic. Their set pieces also deserve attention after the D.C. equaliser. Fraser's side must balance those attacks with cover for the space Almirón may find when possession changes hands. If Toronto can spend long periods in Atlanta's half, the home side will have to resist the kind of late pressure that has hurt them. If Atlanta break the first line of pressure, Toronto's historical difficulty at this stadium may be tested again.

Squad availability before kickoff

Atlanta had not issued a Toronto-specific availability report at the time of the October 31 check. Will Reilly was out with an ankle injury that Martino said would keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. Enea Mihaj was listed out with a hip issue in Atlanta's October 27 report for the NYCFC game; that report does not establish whether he will be available on Sunday. A match-specific list remains necessary before treating his status as settled.

Toronto had not published a match-specific availability report for the trip at the time of the same check. Sargent, Osorio and Mihailovic all featured in Wednesday's win, which confirms recent involvement but does not establish Sunday's lineup or rule out later changes. The official squads will provide the definitive answer nearer kickoff.
