Thunder at Rockets: Oklahoma City faces unbeaten Houston after a difficult week

Houston has won its first five games, while the Thunder must respond to their first loss and injuries to two important players. They meet Saturday, October 31, at Toyota Center.

The Rockets and Thunder arrive in Houston with contrasting momentum and different problems to solve. Houston is 5-0 after a convincing win in Milwaukee. Oklahoma City lost for the first time Wednesday in Dallas, already without Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace. The visit to Toyota Center will test whether the Thunder can restore their offensive rhythm. Houston, meanwhile, has a compressed schedule: it visits the Mavericks on Friday before returning home to face Oklahoma City the following night.

  • Competition: 2026-27 NBA regular season.
  • Matchup: Oklahoma City Thunder at Houston Rockets.
  • Venue: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas.
  • Tipoff: Saturday, October 31, 7:30 p.m. CDT in Houston; 8:30 p.m. EDT in the eastern United States.

The Rockets' fast start has several sources

Houston moved to 5-0 with a 132-100 victory at Milwaukee on Wednesday. Fred VanVleet scored 24 points, Amen Thompson 23 and Kevin Durant 18. The Rockets took charge by winning the second quarter 34-14, then maintained control after halftime. VanVleet, who missed all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, scored 15 straight Houston points during the third quarter. His return gives the team an experienced organizer alongside Thompson's drives and Durant's scoring.

Alperen Şengün sat out the Milwaukee game because of lower-back soreness, changing Houston's interior rotation without stopping the win. Steven Adams was also out with a right calf strain and Marcus Smart missed a third consecutive game because of a left forearm strain. None of those Wednesday absences establishes who can play Saturday. Houston first has a Friday visit to Dallas scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT, leaving limited recovery time before the Thunder arrive.

Oklahoma City's first defeat exposed an offensive problem

The Thunder won their opening four games, then lost 120-96 in Dallas on October 28. Ajay Mitchell scored 29 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 21, but the team made only five of 32 three-point attempts. Dallas hit 16 of 45. One bad shooting night cannot define a season; it does show why Oklahoma City struggled to stay in the game.

The injury problem is more lasting. Jalen Williams suffered a fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle against the Clippers and requires surgery, according to the team's announcement reported by the NBA. No return date was set. Wallace sustained a torn labrum and also faces a lengthy absence. Both contribute as defenders and offensive creators. Their loss puts more work on Mitchell and the other guards around Gilgeous-Alexander. Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso did not play in Dallas either, but their status for Houston needs a newer report.

Houston availability

A game-specific official injury report for Saturday had not been published at the latest check. The following information comes from the Milwaukee game:

  • Alperen Şengün: missed Wednesday with lower-back soreness; Saturday status unconfirmed.
  • Steven Adams: missed Wednesday with a right calf strain; Saturday status unconfirmed.
  • Marcus Smart: missed Wednesday with a left forearm strain; Saturday status unconfirmed.

Oklahoma City availability

A game-specific official injury report for Saturday had likewise not been published at the latest check:

  • Jalen Williams: fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle; surgery required, with no return date announced.
  • Cason Wallace: torn labrum and an extended absence; no confirmed return date.
  • Chet Holmgren: missed the Dallas game with right-knee patellar tendinitis; status for Houston pending an update.
  • Alex Caruso: did not play in Dallas; status for Houston unconfirmed.

Ball pressure, spacing and a short turnaround

Gilgeous-Alexander draws defenders with his changes of pace and creates opportunities for teammates. Houston can counter with Thompson's activity and, depending on availability, different lineup sizes. The Thunder need to find cleaner perimeter attempts than they managed in Dallas without exposing themselves in transition. The Rockets must handle the trip to Dallas the preceding night; whether that affects their defensive energy will become clear only on the floor.

The contest near the rim also depends on medical updates. If Şengün returns, Houston regains its principal interior passer; if he remains out, Clint Capela can supply a different presence in the paint, as he did in Milwaukee. Holmgren's potential return or continued absence would similarly affect Oklahoma City's rim protection and the space around Gilgeous-Alexander. These are possibilities, not announced starting lineups.
