Manchester City and Brighton return to the Etihad on Saturday with a footballing argument still unresolved. Brighton twice led in Wednesday's League Cup tie before City equalised and won the shootout 4–3 following a 2–2 draw after 90 minutes. Enzo Maresca's side took the place in the next round, yet Fabian Hürzeler's team showed how its pressing and attacking movement can trouble the Premier League leaders. Three days later, they face each other again, potentially with different personnel and with league points at stake.

Match details

  • Competition: 2026/27 Premier League, matchweek 9.
  • Fixture: Manchester City at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.
  • Venue: Etihad Stadium, Manchester.
  • Kickoff: Saturday 31 October at 15:00 GMT in Manchester; 15:00 UTC.

What the cup tie revealed

After eight league games, City lead with 21 points, level with Arsenal, while Brighton are third on 16. The leaders suffered their first league defeat of the season last Saturday, losing 2–1 at Aston Villa. Nicolas Jackson scored twice, either side of an Erling Haaland equaliser. Brighton also lost their most recent Premier League match, 2–0 at Liverpool. A Florian Wirtz shot deflected off Pascal Groß and was recorded as the Brighton midfielder's own goal; Alexander Isak added the second within the opening 21 minutes. Both teams therefore went into the cup tie following a league defeat, though their places in the table still reflect strong starts.

In the first of Brighton's two visits, the away side won the ball high up the pitch to create Malick Yalcouyé's opener. Mateo Kovačić equalised before halftime. A lengthy Brighton passing move ended with Georginio Rutter putting the visitors back ahead early in the second half, before a Rayan Cherki free kick deflected off Vitor Reis for 2–2. Brighton came close again: Gerónimo Rulli tipped a Rutter effort away and Mats Wieffer hit the post. Rulli then saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to send City through. The score and the outcome tell different stories. The home team survived sustained pressure, but Brighton could not turn its leads into a win.

Maresca made nine changes to City's starting team for the cup match. He had also given Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Joško Gvardiol and Rúben Dias three days off after the defeat at Villa. The break may shape his choices for Saturday without making any of them confirmed starters. One selection is settled: after praising Rulli's saves, Maresca said Donnarumma will return in goal for the league game. Hürzeler rotated Brighton's side too; Yankuba Minteh and Wieffer returned from lengthy absences as substitutes, increasing his options from the bench.

Squad availability and decisions to come

City remain without Antoine Semenyo. Maresca reported a knee injury and estimated an absence of around eight weeks when the diagnosis was made. The forward did not play at Villa or in the cup; Haaland's availability consequently carries greater weight in City's attack. The Norwegian scored at Villa Park and rested on Wednesday, but Maresca has not named Saturday's starting XI. City did not report a new absence among the players used in the cup match in its immediate post-match account.

Brighton have two players back, although a substitute appearance is not proof of full match fitness. Minteh, injured during preseason, and Wieffer, who had missed nine games, both came on in the final 15 minutes of the cup tie after knee problems. Hürzeler now has alternatives to change the tempo, but has not said how much they can play in the rematch. Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Chema Andrés sustained hip problems at Liverpool. Brighton said they would be assessed before the cup match, and neither featured on Wednesday; their availability for Saturday's league fixture remains unconfirmed.

Manchester City: an absence and a planned return

  • Antoine Semenyo: out with a knee injury; Maresca estimated roughly eight weeks of recovery.
  • Gianluigi Donnarumma: Maresca said he will return in goal for the league match after Rulli played in the cup.
  • Erling Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Joško Gvardiol and Rúben Dias: given three days off before the cup tie; Saturday's starters have not been announced.

Brighton: two returns and two assessments

  • Yankuba Minteh: returned as a substitute on Wednesday after a preseason knee injury.
  • Mats Wieffer: appeared as a substitute after missing nine matches with a knee injury.
  • Ferdi Kadıoğlu and Chema Andrés: under assessment for hip problems sustained at Liverpool; neither played in the cup tie.

Brighton's pressure will be one of the central tests. Hürzeler sends players to contest possession high up the pitch, and Wednesday's opening goal came from precisely that kind of recovery. Maresca described Brighton as aggressive and capable of attacking with many players. With Donnarumma in goal and possibly more regular starters returning, City could change how they play through the first line of pressure. That is a tactical possibility, not an announced lineup.

The other issue is what happens beyond the press. City had 63% possession and seven shots on target at Villa Park, but conceded both goals in quick attacking moves by the opposition. Brighton showed in the cup that they can accelerate after regaining the ball and can also sustain a long spell of possession, as they did for Rutter's goal. If City move the ball beyond the pressing players, their forwards may find space. If they again lose it in dangerous areas, Brighton already know a route towards goal.

Wednesday's shootout settled a cup tie, but not which team can better impose its game when league points are on offer. Saturday will provide the more useful answer for the table: City are seeking to hold the lead, while Brighton can cut the gap after proving they can compete at the Etihad.
