Kings at Pelicans: both defenses seek answers in New Orleans
Sacramento arrives with four losses, and New Orleans plays Thursday on the second night of a back-to-back. Sabonis and Williamson offer different routes to the basket, but the points both teams have allowed frame the matchup.

Sacramento and New Orleans had yet to win when Wednesday began, although the Pelicans still had a game to play that night. The Kings head to Smoothie King Center after allowing 130 points in San Antonio; the hosts face Denver again before welcoming Sacramento. Thursday’s meeting will test both teams’ protection of the rim and their ability to hold a lead, two questions raised by the opening games.
- Competition: NBA, 2026–27 regular season.
- Game: Sacramento Kings at New Orleans Pelicans.
- Venue: Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.
- Tipoff: Thursday, October 29, 7:00 p.m. CDT in New Orleans (8:00 p.m. EDT; Friday, October 30, 00:00 UTC).
Sacramento: Sabonis produces, but points keep going the other way
The Kings were 0–4 after losing 130–103 to the Spurs on Tuesday. San Antonio scored 80 points in the first half, leaving Sacramento chasing the game throughout the second. Domantas Sabonis had 20 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists; De’Andre Hunter scored 24 and Zach LaVine 22. Those contributions were not enough against an opponent that made 17 of 37 three-point attempts.
The NBA team page recorded 107.8 points scored and 125.5 allowed per game for Sacramento through four contests. It was among the teams scoring the fewest and conceding the most. The sample is still small, but it reveals two different problems: creating good shots while integrating rookie Darius Acuff Jr. and preventing each missed attempt from turning into an opponent’s transition chance.
Sabonis can distribute from the post and elbow as well as finish and secure rebounds. LaVine and Hunter provide perimeter scoring. The NBA’s official season preview identified the integration of Acuff with those veterans as a task for coach Doug Christie. The game in New Orleans is another test of that combination; a strong individual performance does not establish that the offense is now consistently effective.
New Orleans scores, but has not contained opponents either
The Pelicans entered Wednesday at 0–3 with 124.7 points per game, the league’s third-highest average, according to their official team page. They were also allowing 128.0, one of the highest figures. In their previous game, Denver recovered from a 23-point deficit in the third quarter and won 141–135 in overtime. Trey Murphy III led New Orleans with 26 points; Dejounte Murray added 22, while Zion Williamson and Derik Queen scored 17 each.
That comeback says more than the simple label of a winless team. New Orleans built a substantial lead but could not keep control of possessions as Denver rallied. The Pelicans hosted the Nuggets again on Wednesday and face Sacramento less than 24 hours later. The record, averages and player status described here therefore reflect the period before that game; Wednesday’s result could change the context for Thursday.
Williamson drives into the paint and forces defenders to close space near the rim. The NBA’s season preview noted that New Orleans took an unusually high share of its shots in that area last season. Queen and Jeremiah Fears are part of the development of the young roster, while Murphy stretches the floor with his shooting. If the Pelicans move the ball before Sacramento sets its defense, they could exploit one of the Kings’ early weaknesses. If Sacramento controls the rebounds through Sabonis, it will have more chances to establish a measured pace. These are possibilities based on observed play, not instructions announced by the coaches.
Player availability
The NBA’s official injury report for Sacramento at New Orleans on Thursday still had no submission from either club in the Wednesday 4:45 p.m. EDT edition. That does not mean all players will be available. Yves Missi was listed as out with a left knee contusion for New Orleans’ Wednesday game against Denver, but that designation does not establish his status for Thursday. Neither starting lineup was confirmed.

The Kings will try to make Sabonis’s production count for more on the scoreboard; the Pelicans will aim to keep scoring despite another night of physical demands. Control of the paint and of possessions after halftime will offer a more useful measure than averages from just a handful of games.
