Lakers at Clippers: Dončić brings an unbeaten start to Garland’s Intuit Dome
The Lakers won the first meeting of the season 125-117 and were 3-0 before Tuesday’s game against Portland. The 1-2 Clippers host the rematch after a loss in Oklahoma City, with neither club’s injury report for Wednesday submitted as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Lakers and Clippers meet for the second time in six days, this time on the Clippers’ floor. Luka Dončić’s team won 125-117 at Crypto.com Arena on Friday. At Intuit Dome on Wednesday, Darius Garland and his teammates can test whether their adjustments since that defeat are enough against an opponent that opened the season with three straight wins.

Dončić follows a 52-point night
The Lakers stood at 3-0 after overturning an 18-point deficit to beat Utah 132-123 on Sunday. Dončić scored 52 points, made eight 3-pointers and supplied 10 assists; Austin Reaves added 29 points, according to the NBA’s official roundup. Their combined production gives this game a sharper frame than the unbeaten record alone. Dončić can create the initial advantage with the ball, while Reaves can punish a defense that puts too many resources into stopping him.
Reaves had 28 points and nine assists in the first Lakers-Clippers meeting of the season. Garland scored 26 for the visitors. Those numbers belong to Friday’s game, and the venue has changed. JJ Redick’s Lakers host Portland on Tuesday before visiting Intuit Dome on Wednesday. That game had not been played when this preview was prepared, so its result and the minutes logged by the Lakers cannot be assumed.
The Lakers have also reshaped their roster. The NBA’s season preview identified Dončić and Reaves as the remaining backcourt core, with Walker Kessler and Sandro Mamukelashvili offering new options inside. Redick’s choices in Inglewood will depend on the workload from Tuesday and on actual player availability, not just on what worked in Utah.
Garland and the cost of turnovers
The Clippers were 1-2 after a 108-101 loss in Oklahoma City on Sunday. Their box score recorded 26 turnovers. That number does not explain the entire defeat, but it identifies a danger against a team that can turn an extra possession into points from Dončić or Reaves. Garland is central to organizing the home offense. The question is whether the Clippers can create good shots without handing their opponent transition chances.
Tyronn Lue is coaching a group that looks very different from last season’s. The NBA’s season preview named Garland and Brandon Ingram as the main creators and Max Strus as a player who can stretch the floor with his shooting. Yet Ingram and Strus did not play against the Thunder on Sunday, nor did Bradley Beal and Yanic Konan Niederhauser. Missing that game does not establish that any of them will miss Wednesday’s. A return would alter Lue’s attacking options; continued absences would place more responsibility on the players around Garland.
The Clippers also have a defensive decision to make. Dončić did more than score 52 in Utah: he assisted 10 baskets. Giving him room to shoot after a late help rotation and leaving teammates open are different risks. The home team must balance them as the Lakers try to involve Reaves and their big men when attention shifts toward Dončić. These are possible tactical choices, not confirmed lineups or assignments.
Player availability
- Lakers: the report for Tuesday’s game against Portland listed Cameron Carr and Adou Thiero as out and Walker Kessler as available while wearing a splint on a finger. It applies to a different game and does not determine their status for Wednesday.
- Clippers: Ingram, Beal, Strus and Niederhauser did not play at Oklahoma City on Sunday. Their status against the Lakers remains to be confirmed.
- Both teams: the NBA’s official report at 3:15 p.m. EDT on Tuesday still listed the Lakers and Clippers as “not yet submitted” for Wednesday’s game. That is not a declaration that either roster is fully healthy.
