Raptors at Bucks: Barnes carries Toronto's Cup response into Herro's Milwaukee

Toronto arrives at Fiserv Forum with a loss in East Group A and without Kawhi Leonard. Milwaukee opens its NBA Cup schedule after losing seven of its first eight regular-season games. Friday puts Scottie Barnes's expanded playmaking role against a Bucks team that has found points from Tyler Herro but has struggled to sustain its better stretches long enough to win.

  • Competition: 2026-27 NBA season, Emirates NBA Cup group play, East Group A. The result also counts in the regular season.
  • Matchup: Toronto Raptors at Milwaukee Bucks.
  • Tipoff: Friday, November 6, 7:00 p.m. CST in Milwaukee (8:00 p.m. EST); Saturday, November 7, 01:00 UTC.
  • Venue: Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A second group loss would leave Toronto with ground to make up

The Raptors are 4-4. Their Cup opener ended in a 121-114 home loss to Orlando on October 30 even though Barnes scored a career-high 41 points. Toronto's most recent game, a 128-109 defeat at Denver on Wednesday, November 4, exposed another problem: the Nuggets shot 61.5% from the field. RJ Barrett led Toronto with 22 points; Barnes had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Immanuel Quickley recorded seven assists. One game does not define a defense, but the number shows how much pressure the Raptors face when an opponent gets through the first line and forces help near the basket.

Barnes gives Toronto several ways to answer. Against the Magic he made 19 of 34 shots and kept the offense moving deep into the fourth quarter. Orlando still got six 3-pointers from Desmond Bane and 26 points plus 11 assists from Franz Wagner. Barrett's scoring led the way in Denver instead. If Barnes can draw defenders inward without Toronto losing its defensive balance after a miss, Quickley and Barrett should have more room to create the next shot. That is the tactical possibility, not a promised starting lineup.

Herro's scoring has not yet brought Milwaukee wins

The Bucks enter at 1-7. They lost 109-102 in Boston on Wednesday after erasing a 22-point deficit and drawing level at 97. Herro scored 25 and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 18, but the Celtics took the decisive possessions. Boston won the rebounding battle 54-45, with 19 offensive boards. Milwaukee's defense cannot finish a stop if the opponent gets the ball back.

This is the Bucks' first Cup game in a group that also includes Toronto, Orlando, Detroit and Brooklyn. Taylor Jenkins now coaches a team built around Herro following Giannis Antetokounmpo's trade to Miami. Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma also played in Boston. Turner can protect the rim and stretch the floor; Kuzma offers another scoring route from the wing. Their appearance on Wednesday does not settle Friday's availability, and Milwaukee has announced no starting five for the Toronto game.

Rebounding could determine which scorer sees the better conditions. If Turner and Milwaukee's wings secure the first miss, Herro can push into space. If Barnes gets into the lane and the Raptors recover their own misses without sacrificing transition defense, the Bucks may have to defend longer possessions. The possibilities follow from recent games; neither coach has announced that plan.

Availability: the game-specific report is still due

The NBA's official injury report at 12:45 p.m. EST on Thursday, November 5, listed both teams as “NOT YET SUBMITTED” for Friday's game. That means no game-specific designations had been filed at that point; it does not mean every player is available. For a game that is not the second night of a back-to-back, the league requires the first report by 5 p.m. local time the previous day.

Toronto Raptors

  • Kawhi Leonard: Toronto said treatment for swelling in his left knee was complete and that he had begun the return-to-play process. The team said Tuesday he would miss at least three more games and promised an update in a week. He is therefore not expected to play in Milwaukee; beginning that process is not clearance to compete.
  • Other absences and questions: Toronto had not submitted its Friday designations in the 12:45 p.m. EST report. Barnes, Barrett, Quickley and Jakob Poeltl playing at Denver does not confirm their availability at Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Bucks

  • Absences and questions: Milwaukee had not submitted Friday designations in that report either. An absence or a coach's decision against Boston should not be carried over as a confirmed status for this Cup game.
  • Returns: the club had announced no specific return for Friday. Herro, Jaquez, Turner and Kuzma logging minutes in Boston does not amount to a game-day confirmation.

Toronto is trying to avoid an 0-2 start in the group; Milwaukee is looking for a home Cup win to interrupt its poor regular-season run. The four quarters will show whether Barnes's pressure on the defense outweighs the Bucks' ability to turn Herro's scoring into a sustained team performance.
