Philadelphia visits Cleveland with October's comeback now carrying NBA Cup stakes

Cleveland led Philadelphia by 29 points on Oct. 22 and still lost 114-106. Two weeks later the Cavaliers host the same opponent, this time with LeBron James wearing the visitors' uniform and an East Group B NBA Cup result at stake. The 76ers bring the stronger early-season record, but the first meeting offered each team a different warning about how quickly control of a game can change.

  • Competition: 2026-27 NBA season, Emirates NBA Cup group play, East Group B.
  • Matchup: Philadelphia 76ers at Cleveland Cavaliers.
  • Tipoff: Friday, Nov. 6, 7:30 p.m. EST in Cleveland; Saturday, Nov. 7, 00:30 UTC.
  • Venue: Rocket Arena, Cleveland, Ohio.

What the 29-point swing actually showed

Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points, 20 of them in the first half, as Cleveland built that large lead in Philadelphia. Tyrese Maxey then finished with 32 and Joel Embiid with 24 in the Sixers' 114-106 win. The 69-37 second half was a decisive reversal, but it is no reason to assume another comeback. Nor does Cleveland's early advantage guarantee that the Cavaliers will generate the same shots at home. The repeat meeting makes possession control a more useful question than the final margin alone.

The Sixers committed 11 turnovers in the opening 13 minutes, according to the NBA's account of the October game. Cleveland used those giveaways to create separation. In the second half Philadelphia increased its pressure, and its starters scored 64 of the team's 69 points after halftime. The visitors cannot count on recovering from such a deficit again. Cleveland needs to preserve the ball movement and defensive discipline that produced its lead rather than treating the loss as a verdict on its ability to challenge Philadelphia.

The Cup adds another layer. Philadelphia beat the defending champion New York Knicks 98-93 in its group opener on Oct. 30, with 27 points from Maxey and 20 from James. Friday is Cleveland's first East Group B game. The two clubs share the group with New York, Miami and Indiana, so this result will affect group standings as well as the regular-season records.

The Sixers' 8-1 start meets a Cleveland team at 4-4

Philadelphia beat Detroit 112-106 on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to improve to 8-1. Jaylen Brown scored 30 points, Embiid added 26 points and 15 rebounds, Maxey scored 19, and James supplied 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The Pistons cut into an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit before Philadelphia closed the game at the free-throw line. The win demonstrated how many scoring and passing options the Sixers possess, while the late rally showed that a big lead is not secure on its own.

Brown and Maxey create problems away from the rim, Embiid can command help in the paint, and James can connect the two areas with his passing. If Cleveland crowds Embiid, Philadelphia's perimeter players may find space. If the Cavaliers stay attached to shooters, Embiid could receive the ball in more dangerous positions. Those are possible responses, not lineups or instructions announced by either coach. Wednesday's box score also does not establish who will be cleared to play Friday.

Cleveland lost 124-116 at Oklahoma City on Wednesday and fell to 4-4. Mitchell had 27 points and made five 3-pointers. James Harden finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists, although he shot 5-for-16 from the field; Evan Mobley had 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 25, scored 42 in the final quarter and still could not catch the Thunder. Their 19 3-pointers on 49 attempts show one way they can spread a defense, without forecasting the same shooting against Philadelphia.

Mitchell and Harden can each start a possession with the ball, and Mobley provides an interior target and rebounding. The central challenge is turning those options into sustained offense if the Sixers raise their defensive pressure. The first meeting flipped when the turnovers and pace flipped. Cleveland's individual scoring was only part of that story.

James's return and the unanswered availability question

James spent 11 seasons with the Cavaliers and helped bring Cleveland the 2016 championship. This will be his first game there as a 76er. The homecoming is substantial in his career, but its basketball effect will depend on how his creation fits alongside Maxey and Brown against a defense that has already faced them. Cleveland must also avoid giving those teammates comfortable shots while concentrating on James.

The NBA's official injury report at 8:15 a.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 5 still listed “NOT YET SUBMITTED” for both teams for Friday's game. That dated entry does not mean either roster is fully available. For a game that is not the second night of a back-to-back, the league requires initial designations by 5 p.m. local time on the preceding day.

Philadelphia 76ers

  • Out or questionable: no game-specific designations had been submitted in that report. The fact that Brown, Embiid, Maxey and James played Wednesday does not confirm their participation Friday.
  • Potential returns: no player had been specifically cleared to return for this game in the cited report.

Cleveland Cavaliers

  • Out or questionable: Cleveland had not submitted game-specific designations in that report either. Minutes for Mitchell, Harden, Mobley and Jarrett Allen against Oklahoma City cannot settle their status for the Cup game.
  • Potential returns: no game-specific clearance had been announced in the cited report.
