Leipzig vs Manchester City: home streak meets a side seeking a response after two league defeats
Martín Demichelis's team have won ten straight games at the RB Arena but hold only three Champions League points. City have six in Europe after three rounds, despite back-to-back Premier League defeats. Norway team-mates Antonio Nusa and Erling Haaland face each other with both clubs needing a result for different reasons.

Leipzig's 2-0 win at Schalke showed how two of their attackers can work together. Rômulo won the penalty converted by Nusa, who later supplied the pass for Rômulo's goal. City know Leipzig can score, but the English side arrive in a difficult domestic spell: Brighton beat them 1-0 on Saturday, a week after a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. Enzo Maresca's side have won two of their three Champions League matches. Wednesday will test whether that European form survives Leipzig's home pressure.
- Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase, matchday four.
- Fixture: RB Leipzig vs Manchester City; Leipzig are at home.
- Kick-off: Wednesday 4 November, 21:00 CET in Leipzig (20:00 UTC; 15:00 EST in New York).
- Venue: RB Arena, Leipzig, Germany.
Nusa and Rômulo lead Leipzig's improvement
Leipzig began their European campaign with a 4-1 loss to Como, beat PSV 1-0 at home and then lost 4-1 in Madrid. Three points put them 29th in the 36-team table before this round. Their recent German results tell a more encouraging story: a 4-0 win over Elversberg, a 2-1 cup comeback against Rot-Weiss Essen powered by two Christoph Baumgartner goals, and a 2-0 victory at Schalke on 31 October. The club reports ten successive home wins in all competitions, five this season.
Nusa scored the penalty at Schalke and set up Rômulo's finish. Leipzig credit the winger with four goals and six assists in eight Bundesliga games. Rômulo had scored twice against Elversberg; his goal in Gelsenkirchen was his fourth in the league this season. Their partnership gives Leipzig a quick route upfield when opponents leave space behind the midfield. It also sharpens the team's defensive obligation: Demichelis's players conceded four in Como and four at the Bernabéu.
City are tenth in the league phase on six points. They beat Porto and AEK Athens before losing 4-2 at home to Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League defeats do not erase those results. Maresca rotated heavily for the League Cup meeting with Brighton, then restored many regulars for Saturday's league game. Haaland led the attack, with Jeremy Doku and Iliman Ndiaye on the wings, but City did not score. Afterward, Maresca said his team had created enough chances and needed to finish them better.
Availability before the trip
RB Leipzig
Leipzig have yet to issue a medical bulletin specifically for City. At his 30 October news conference, Demichelis said 22 outfield players were healthy in training ahead of Schalke. That number does not confirm Wednesday's squad.
- Christoph Baumgartner: returned to playing minutes after injury and came off the bench against Schalke. His role and workload against City have not been announced.
Baumgartner scored twice in the cup comeback at Essen. More minutes from him would give Leipzig another runner from midfield, but an improving fitness report is no basis for naming him a starter.
Manchester City
City's latest club availability update was issued on 30 October, before Brighton; there is no separate list for the trip to Germany.
- Antoine Semenyo: Maresca identified him then as the only unavailable player and said he would be out for a few more weeks after an injury sustained against Ipswich. City have not issued a Leipzig-specific update.
- Matheus Nunes: returned after missing several games through injury and started against Brighton. No starting XI has been announced for Wednesday.
Nunes's return provides another option at right-back. If Semenyo remains out, City have one fewer pace option in attack. Maresca said everyone else was available for Brighton on 30 October; that statement applies to that match and date.
Turnovers, transitions and Haaland's runs
Leipzig's own preview argues that City have given opponents openings when they lose the ball with players committed forward. Rômulo's goal at Schalke came from a constructed move rather than a counterattack, but Nusa can accelerate from the flank in either kind of attack. If Leipzig win possession without pulling their lines too far apart, City's midfield will be forced to defend facing its own goal. A rushed press, by contrast, could open a central route towards Haaland.
UEFA counts 12 Haaland goals in eight appearances against Leipzig for Borussia Dortmund and City, including five in one match in 2023. That record is context, not a forecast. Centre-back Willi Orbán and goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt are coming off a clean sheet at Schalke. Their European challenge is to keep the gap between the first press and the back line small when City switch play. For the visitors, the question is whether they can turn possession into clear chances without giving Nusa and Rômulo a free outlet.
Demichelis knows the opposition from inside: he spent three seasons as a City player and, according to Leipzig, this will be his first match against the club from the opposing dugout. Joško Gvardiol returns to the city where he played before moving to England. The clubs have met six times in the Champions League, with four City wins, one Leipzig win and a draw. Leipzig's 2-1 victory at this ground in December 2021 shows what a home meeting can produce, although both squads and their coaches have since changed.

Leipzig want to turn their RB Arena run into points in a league phase that still leaves them outside the qualification places. City need an answer after two domestic defeats and have already won twice in Europe. The game will show whether Leipzig's speed exposes space or City can keep the play close to the home penalty area.
