Jazz at Mavericks: George and Irving meet as both offenses seek steadier endings

Keyonte George scored 39 in Utah's overtime loss at New Orleans, but the Jazz still left with a sixth consecutive defeat. Dallas lost by one at San Antonio after erasing a 19-point deficit. Their Friday meeting in the NBA Cup's West Group A brings those unfinished comebacks together. The Mavericks won their group opener; Utah is playing its first Cup game.

George's scoring has not cured Utah's possession problem

Utah is 1-7 and has lost six straight. On Wednesday, November 4, the Jazz led New Orleans by ten after three quarters, yet lost 120-113 in overtime. George supplied 39 points and nine assists, while Lauri Markkanen had 21 points and ten rebounds. The Jazz committed 22 turnovers and made only 11 of 47 attempts from beyond the arc. Their scoring bursts could not offset the extra possessions handed to the Pelicans.

George found a route to the basket even when the outside shots were falling short. Markkanen made five threes, giving Utah a different way to stretch the floor. Rookie Darryn Peterson scored seven points but distributed seven assists against New Orleans. His decisions alongside George's will matter if the Jazz want to create catches for Markkanen without exposing the ball. Better spacing alone will not help if another run of turnovers interrupts their offense.

Dallas can rally; the next test is finishing the job

The Mavericks are 4-4. They opened Cup play with a 116-111 win over Houston on October 30, then lost two consecutive games. Wednesday's 112-111 defeat at San Antonio required a comeback from 19 points down against Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 52 points and 24 rebounds. Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Cooper Flagg posted 19 points, ten rebounds and five assists; P.J. Washington added 21 points and ten boards.

Irving can generate a shot late in a possession, while Flagg's movement and passing give Dallas another route into the paint. Washington hit three three-pointers against the Spurs. Yet the Mavericks shot five for 36 from deep overall and were outrebounded 61-50. They will face a different interior challenge on Friday: George's drives can pull a defender toward the ball, and Markkanen has just shown he can punish the space that opens beyond the arc.

The turnover battle connects the two recent defeats. Utah gave away 22 possessions in New Orleans; Dallas has the personnel to turn a steal or a defensive rebound into an attack before the Jazz set their defense. If George and Peterson keep the ball moving without those mistakes, Utah can make the Mavericks defend for longer and find Markkanen away from the crowd.
